Best Indoor Date Ideas

Est: 7 Minutes Read

I know for a fact that I’m not the only homebody here. I do go out now and then but I, generally, prefer staying indoors. So, one time I had arranged for a date with a pretty young thing but I didn’t want to go out. I scoured the internet for ideas on what to do indoors only to find content that isn’t really relatable. It was mostly from American blogs, and you all know the crazy things Americans like doing. Despite this, I did get some insights and it got me thinking.

Have you ever just wanted to chill with your Mr or Missus indoors but not do the boring movie? Either you didn’t feel like going out, you had a little cash crunch or you were simply unable to go out, as we were unable to for a long time during the pandemic. Well, I’m trying to take all the guesswork out of planning an indoor date. Trust me, it’s an awesome idea. It’s cheap, easy to set up and can come through as very thoughtful, unique and romantic. Without wasting any more time, here are my suggestions for indoor date ideas:

DARTS

When I bought my dartboard, it was simply for fun. I was looking for a hobby I could engage in and darts seemed to be very interesting and not very demanding. I hadn’t played the game before. I ended up enjoying it very much when I played alone and with friends. Only when I had female company, I realized that this was something quite fun to do. The game is relatively easy for even inexperienced players to jump right in, although they’ll need a few tries to develop their technique. It can also get quite competitive since you’re playing against each other, this can help you see how the other person behaves in the face of failure or success. You can add a little twist to it by the loser drinking a shot or two or some other interesting activity.

Dartboards are relatively cheap, I got mine for KShs 1,000 somewhere along Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi CBD. The quality is alright although the darts are made of plastic with a metallic tip and are not that high quality. They work just fine nonetheless since I don’t play every waking moment.

The only downside is that for first time players, after playing for an hour or two, you’ll wake up with an annoying pain on the underside of your arm the next day, although this only happens the first time and never again in most circumstances, so consider that when you engage a total newbie.

CARD GAMES

This is a no brainer. Card games are among the most popular indoor games available. Cards are very cheap and very easy to access and most people know how to play cards with the most popular game being poker. I understand that there are other games out there, however, poker is my favourite. Just like darts, you can add a twist to it in the form of shots when someone loses or when you’re given a picking card like 2/3/Joker.

As a bonus, you can look up some simple card tricks online that you can use to wow your partner. I used to know one but the technique disappeared from memory, haha. The tricks are very simple, they’re very impressive, trust me on this.

BOARD GAMES

This doesn’t really come as a surprise, I hope not. I think for most of us born in the 90s going back, we’re familiar with at least a couple of board games. These are the kind of things that kept us busy at family functions, sleepovers or when there were no lights. We didn’t have smartphones, access to the internet or all the awesome things kids enjoy nowadays. Regardless, board games are very simple to learn and engage in.

I had actually forgotten about the number of board games out there before researching on this post, the choices are vast. The beauty of them is that they’re very cheap to purchase. All of them are going for less than KShs 2,000 on Jumia, so I imagine if you walk around in Nairobi CBD you might get a better deal.

The games you might want to consider are Chess, Ludo and droughts if you’re more into strategy-type games. Monopoly is also a good choice, or I hear, never gotten around to playing it, but it looks fun. Snakes and ladders seems more like a goofy game to me but is really great since it’s purely based on luck and can bring some much-needed fun to the date. It’s also quite simple to play, so why not. I’ve not really played scrabble before, it seems a little too serious for me, but it looks fun in movies, so you can try that. The last two, Jenga and solving a Rubik’s cube, are not really board games but I think they deserved an honourable mention since they’re close in nature to board games.

JIGSAW PUZZLE

Many would consider this a board game type, but I strongly disagree. It can be done by one person and is not a competition, so it’s technically not a game. You can find some book-oriented puzzles, whereby the puzzles have stories attached to them and you fill in the puzzle next to it or find stand-alone puzzles.

I’ve personally had a book-type jigsaw puzzle since I was a kid. It’s based on fairy tales and has about five of them. When I attempted it just recently, we took out all the puzzles and started putting them back in one by one. It took quite some time and mental energy, but it was quite nice. You’ll sometimes find yourselves going quiet as you keenly look for a specific piece. I enjoyed it thoroughly. You could read the stories afterwards if you’d like, although that sounds like a quick bedtime story to the person who’ll be listening.

An interesting tip to note, if you’re solving more than one puzzle at a time, take a photo of all of them before dismantling them, that’s if they don’t have a reference photo accompanying them.

MOVIE DATE

I know I know, I said you can consider these when you want to do something other than watching a movie but hear me out. Don’t just look for any movie, look for the wackiest movie you can find. I, being a filmmaker, would go for an old school type movie that we can critique and laugh at all the wacky effects they did at the time. You don’t want something that will require your full attention since that wouldn’t be much of a date, to begin with. You want something with a very simple storyline, that you can almost predict the ending with 99% accuracy. This will allow you to comment on it, laugh at it, talk to each other and so on. Some websites allow you to stream these for free, these are films from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Sadly, you won’t be finding Kenyan films there. We didn’t have much of a film industry back then. You could also get a couple from your local movie shop, I’m not even sure when the last time I went to a movie shop was, but yeah.

TRUTH OR DARE

If you want to turn the heat up a notch, you can consider truth or dare. It’s a bit risque and obviously has a specific direction and end goal in mind. You want to play this game with someone you’re already comfortable with. I wouldn’t typically consider this for the first few dates. It could, however, be a good way to get intimate once you know the other person a bit better.

COOKING

Cooking isn’t on my bucket list, since someone has to do the dishes afterwards and it sure as hell isn’t going to be me. However, it can be a fun way to engage each other and see the other’s expertise in the kitchen. You can do it as sort of a competition where you make the same dish and see who’s turns out better, cook the main course while your partner does dessert or cook the same meal together, whatever floats your boat.

It’s a good ice breaker though. It could work very well for a first or second date in that you’ll have something to talk about and a shared experience. Grab a bottle of wine to go along with that as well.

As an honourable mention, you could consider wine tasting. This could get a little expensive, but if you’re a wine lover, you just might enjoy the activity. On the plus side, you’ll eventually get drunk.

INDOOR PICNIC

Indoor Picnic: Indoor Date Ideas. This one is my personal favourite. It’s very simple and very unique. Take the table out of your living room and spread a Maasai shuka on the floor. Close all the curtains and make sure you have some darkness in the room if it’s during the day. Get some candles and a chimney lamp if you have one and spread them around the room. Throw some pillows on the floor and add another Maasai shuka to cover up if need be.

For snacks, you don’t need to try too hard. Personally, I have a special omelette recipe that’s to die for. I won’t release the recipe though, it’s a secret, haha. I would go with an omelette and beef/chicken/pork sandwich. Eggs are quite cheap and the beef/chicken/pork brawn usually goes for less than KShs 350 with the chicken brawn being the cheapest at KShs 115 or thereabout. Make sure to burn the bread a little before putting in the egg and brawn. Some cheese wouldn’t hurt as well. You can also throw in some bacon, sausages or anything else as an accompaniment. My sandwich would typically look like this, bottom to top: bread, egg, cheese, chicken brawn, bread, egg, cheese, chicken brawn and bread on top. For drinks, get a nice juice like GoFruit, Orchid Valley, Delmonte, Pick n Peel etc. I prefer these to dilute to drink juices or sodas. That’s really all you need for food. In retrospect, I would throw in some fruits or a fruit salad or a smoothie. Seems like a nice way to wash it all down.

You can accompany the picnic with some indoor games or some other activity. Just don’t watch a movie, you won’t get to know the other person well enough.

There you have it. Those are my top suggestions for indoor date ideas. They’re fairly straightforward. You can pair them up in different combinations to see how well they go with each other or according to your own preferences.
