Women’s World record holder, Brigid Kosgei, is the 2020 women’s London Marathon Winner, retaining her title after crossing the line at 2:18:58. Fellow athlete and country mate, Ruth Chepng’etich fell short of the second position to clinch the third spot after American, Sarah Hall beat her to it. As opposed to the previous years, this year’s marathon does not have thousands of charity runners and crowds cheering on the pavements but instead, the only sign of the ongoing marathon is a barricade of screens plastered around St. James’s Park.
Kenyans have taken to their social media to congratulate the athletes for their wins.
The Deputy President, William Ruto, wrote on his twitter, “ Congratulations Brigid Kosgei & Ruth Chepng’etich for triumphantly defending your London Marathon title & emerging third in the race, respectively. Your endurance, mental strength, will-power &assiduity are a solid manifest that Kenya is home to the World’s top-ranking athletes.”
Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, also took a moment to congratulate Brigid for retaining the title saying, “What an outstanding run, congratulations Brigid Kosgei on successfully defending your title and winning the #LondonMarathon. You have lived up to the strong Kenyan tradition in distance running. Keep going and keep inspiring. Hongera!”
Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, wrote,” Hongera to Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei for retaining the women’s #LondonMarathon2020 after producing a solo run to claim victory. Congratulations to compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich for finishing third in the race. Now hoping for the best for @EliudKipchoge in the men’s marathon.”
