Shura Kitata Stuns Kenyans, Kipchumba To The Rescue!

Kenyans are disappointed that the World Record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, could not defend his title in the just-concluded male London Marathon. Eliud who was the favorite to win the marathon seemed to struggle from the 35km mark and was dropped off the leading pack. Since then, there seemed little hope from the champion who in recent years has dominated the competition, to claim his title as he dropped further back finishing eighth in the race after clocking, 2:06:49.

In a post-race interview, Kipchoge claimed to have had a problem with his ear, whilst accepting defeat as it’s the beauty of competition. “After 25 kilometers my ear blocked and it couldn’t open anymore. But this is how the sport is, we should accept defeat and focus for the winning next time, Thanks for the support,” Kipchoge said. Asked whether he would compete in the future he said, “Absolutely, still more marathons for me.”

Ethiopian, Shura Kitata would then take the crown after a thrilling sprint to cross the line at 2:05:41 ahead of Kenya’s Vincent Kipchumba who finished just a second behind Kitata at 2:05:42.

Kenyans have reacted to this shocking defeat with some hailing the dethroned champion for showing resilience and pushing to finish the race.

@RailaOdinga As a nation, we must always encourage our youth to know that to try, fail, and try again is not a weakness but an essential life skill. I commend @EliudKipchoge for the effort. Congratulations Vincent Kipchumba for coming second and Shura Kitata of Ethiopia for the deserved victory.

@BravinYuri You are a winner either way. “The inner ear contains the vestibular system whose function is the maintenance of the body’s postural equilibrium. Nerve impulses from the inner ear communicate the position of your head allowing you to maintain balance.”
